What is this product?

Pumpernickel is the German equivalent of a dense wholemeal rye loaf, sliced thin and served with cheese, smoked ham or simply good butter. Mestemacher bakes it the traditional Westphalian way from 60 per cent wholemeal rye, steamed slowly for up to 20 hours, which is where the near black colour and the faint sweetness come from. It carries protected geographical indication status and is naturally high in fibre. This is the larger 500 g size, twice the slices of the standard one.
