Ritter Sport was founded in 1912 by Alfred Eugen Ritter and Clara Ritter in Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt. The couple began producing chocolate and confectionery at a time when German craftsmanship in food production was reaching a new level of ambition.

The brand's signature innovation came in 1932 when Clara Ritter had a simple but brilliant idea: design a chocolate bar that fits neatly into a sport jacket pocket and can be broken into squares without snapping the whole bar. The result was the iconic square format, which has defined Ritter Sport ever since and gave the brand its name.

Today, Ritter Sport produces over 100 varieties and remains an independent, family-owned company based in Waldenbuch, Germany.
