Who is Thomy?
Thomy is a German household brand, best known for mustard and mayonnaise sold in squeezable tubes rather than jars or squeezy bottles. If you have opened a German fridge door, you have seen the blue and yellow tubes standing in the shelf.
The tube is the thing British shoppers notice first, because condiments here almost never come that way.
Why a tube
It is a more sensible container than it looks. A tube keeps air off the contents, so mayonnaise and mustard keep better once opened than they do in a jar with a widening gap at the top. It dispenses a controlled line rather than a spoonful, which suits putting a stripe of mustard along a sausage. And it stands in a fridge door taking almost no room.
It also travels. A tube does not leak the way a jar lid does, which is why they turn up in picnic baskets and camping boxes across Germany. (Even though the idea of travelling with a tube of mustard anywhere else sounds eccentric.)
